This past weekend, Ms Sally Gleaves and Mrs Lisa Perkins proudly represented Worcestershire Martial Arts at the International Umpire Course (IUC) held in Newcastle, hosted by the International Taekwon-Do Federation. This globally recognised course brings together experienced instructors and aspiring umpires from around the world, offering in-depth training in competition rules, scoring criteria, and the responsibilities of an international umpire.
At WMA, we believe that martial arts is about more than just kicking and punching—it’s about creating opportunities, pursuing excellence, and providing our students with every possible advantage. That’s why investing in our professional development matters.
What is the IUC?
The International Umpire Course is a prestigious event run by the ITF that prepares instructors and black belts to officiate at national and international competitions. Attendees receive detailed instruction on the rules and procedures of ITF tournaments, enabling them to become certified umpires with the ability to support competitions at the highest level.
For Ms Gleaves and Mrs Perkins, attending this course wasn’t just about qualification—it was about bringing that knowledge back to our students.
Why Does Having Qualified Umpires in a Taekwon-Do School Matter?
You might not immediately think of umpiring when choosing a martial arts school, but here’s why it should matter to you as a student or parent:
1. In-Depth Competition Knowledge
Umpires are trained to understand the rules of competition inside and out—from scoring to penalties, ring control to judging patterns. That means our coaching team can train students not just to perform, but to perform strategically—maximising their chances of success on the mats.
2. Stronger Athlete Preparation
With access to the same training as the people officiating at international events, our coaches are uniquely placed to simulate competition conditions, teach tactical decision-making, and prepare athletes for what to expect. This can give our students a real edge at tournaments.
3. More Opportunities for Students
Being part of a school with connections to international events and bodies like the ITF opens doors for our students. From competing nationally and internationally to exploring coaching, officiating, and leadership pathways—our members aren’t limited to just attending classes. They become part of a community with real progression routes.
4. Raising the Standard Locally
Few schools in the area can boast internationally certified umpires on their coaching team. It reflects our commitment to high standards, ongoing education, and providing the very best for our students. When you train at WMA, you’re not just learning techniques—you’re learning from experts who operate at the highest level of the sport.
